Discuss having feild trips

The students can see what its like to be in the dental setting so they can understand what they will be doing in their chosen field.

Reducing student cheating

I have found that by switching from the electronic format to paper and scrambling the question for each student helps to prevent cheating. The students in my class normally take thier quiz’s online giving them the opportunity to cheat by using Google to look up the question.

Dealing with Challenging Students

All adult students have one challenge or another at some point during the time you have them in your course. Financial, personal, medical and family problems can rear its ugly head at any point. I try and see how each student is acting in class on a daily bases. Any change in their attitude or demeanor that lasted more than a couple days, I would meet with them to talk about the problem. Letting the student know that they are not alone sometimes helps. I try not to become their therapist but tell them they can vent to me. This approach along with telling them to try and leave their problems at the door .

The Distracted Student and Assignment Deadlines

Let me start with a little background. I teach Computers and Networking at a technology school. Our curriculum is all electronic based and is structured in a day by day format with lectures, labs and assignments spelled out. There is submittal, due and late dates assigned to lab and assignments. These show up in a calendar on the students laptops. The dates are also verbally announced when they are becoming due. Any assignment handed in after the due date has 10 points deducted up to 30points (3days) after which a 0 is given. This rule is clearly addressed at the beginning of the course and during the course. Yet students continually miss assignments. The student is given time to complete labs during class but do not use this time. The students are given a laptop that is part of their student fees and belongs to them. They have their electronic books on the laptop and can access the LMS system for their daily work . The problem arises when, as an instructor you do not have any control over the programs and content on students laptop. This makes it very hard to monitor them without physically being over their shoulder. I believe this distraction is contributing to the students late or not submitted assignments. The Student needs internet access to complete the assignments so turning off the internet is not an option. Installing any kind of monitoring software is also not an option due to the laptop belonging to the student. I believe this is a double edge sword that is cutting into the student’s grade.

Class rules and regulations

Let the student know what is exceptable classroom behavior. To let students know expectations of the course.

dealing with challenging students

Consequences of stress

Unavoidable stress can cause negative consequences . Therefore it is vital to employ coping mechanism skills.

coping mechanism

It is vital for career school instructors and students to utilize coping mechanism skills to deal with stress.

Stess management

I am greatful for new effective ways to manage stress . This course will assist my students and my self to avoid some of the negative consequences of stress.

Streamlining lectures preparation

Although a nurse instructor may teach the topic repeatedly, most times he or she is teaching different groups of students, who have different learning styles . Therefore the lecture has be greared towards the learning style of that particular group.

organization with the utilization of a to do list

This course has empowered me with a new way of getting myself more organized as a career school instructor. The utilization of a (to do list), with a given time frame will certainly curb my procrastination tendencies . I will also share this with my students . Most of my students are adults, working the night shift. They are already stressed out before coming to the morning class .

Cheating students

I find that students use the excuse to cheat that my life is to busy. Well I explain to them that they signed up for college and that no one has forced them to. That their paying for an education and why would you want to waste your money and talent on cheating your way through college because in the long run they will not have learned from cheating and it will show in the field.

Instructor Mistakes

During my time teaching I have seen others make mistakes that I have learned from. One is trying to be their friend. I let my students know I am here during office hours if you need to talk about anything personal in your life and they do not bring that in the classroom. I have been asked on many occasions to join classes for dinner after a final and let them know I am the instructor not their friend and cannot do that though I appreciate them asking. I also have seen other instructors allowing gossiping about the Campus and other instructors and students and talking and gossiping with them during class time. I never ever allow this and I find it to be extremely unprofessional in all ways. Day one of my classes I explain to my students no gossiping in my classroom and gossip in the field they are going in will kill their career and blackball them or someone they are gossiping about.

Cheating

I have had many students try to cheat in class and I will call them out of the room in my office hours and explain it was visible to me they were cheating. I have learned over time and years to separate students as well as scramble all paper quizzes and never let anyone talk or leave room during any of the quizzes or exams. We have cut down on homework per say as many were doing it all and others were not. I caught one whole class my first year in Medical Terminology making a word up for a fill in the blank question that doesn't even exist. I asked the whole class this question, "The first student that can find that word in the book gets a prize." Little did they know at first I had them on it and they all learned a quick lesson as to do their own work.

common instructor mistakes

I find that some instructors are to personal with the students they don't know how to leave their personal life at home and also when a student starts complaining about something they let them sit there and keep complaining which only keep the student going. There is a time and place for that and it is not at school.

Dealing with Challenging Students

I have taught many students over the last few years and have run across some that are in the anger mode. I have learned to de-escalate the situation by calmly listening to them as well as making them feel like they matter. You never get angry with them I have learned in life not in teaching as it would only fuel the fire. I have also dealt with many students that are Veterans with issues of PTSD and TBI's and I feel I have handled them appropriately and they still come to me when they are having an off day. If me listening does not seem to handle the problem I will also talk to our DOE and make her aware of the situation and have them go and speak to her. With adult learners it is much different than children because they are adults and we must never judge for we do not know what may be going on in their life, therefore we must always listen and let them know we are understanding.

Dealing with challanging students

Each student is unique in there own way. I get to know each one and learn what will help them and then I apply that with the course being taught. Some students are hands on and some are taught by just reading the content, so I offer different ways to learn and apply that to them.

Eliminating, Reducing and Coping with Stress Brings Relief.

Knowing how to deal with identifiable stressors is the first step in having success in dealing with stress. Recognizing that sharing, getting enough sleep and exercise are excellent ways to deal and cope with stress. And once you have a routine in handling the stressors, you are on the road to healthy living.

Managing Stress Effectively.

In order to manage stress effectively; one must be honest with him/herself about the type of stress being experienced. The individual must be able to identify the type of stress, or get the necessary help in identifying the type of stress being experienced. Once the stressors are identified, then something can be done to work on those stressors and reduce stress significantly. I now have a wider understanding about stress, in that it can affect you short term and leads into long term effects.(Good Course.)

Designing quizzes and test to save time.

Time is very crucial for the instructor, and so, ways must be sought when making quizzes and tests. For example; when making quizzes and tests, software found at http://quizstar.4teachers.org can be used to effectively assist the instructor in saving time; thus getting more in a normal work day of teaching. Also, what would help is to collaborate with other instructors who have taught the course before and utilize materials that may pass on to you. And while teaching the course, you can modify to suit/tailor to your style of instructional delivery.
