Pictionary dry erase board version works great for visual learners

We have had great success using our dry erase board to play pictionary for our Medical Terminology class. The students elected the best artist to do the drawings and then described the condition verbally and the auditory students shouted out the medical terms.

Medical Terminology Mix & Match

My Online Medical Terminology class likes to play a visual and audio version game of Medical Terminology to definition mix & match game. Since we have been playing this game test scores have risen by more than 15% and retention of material has improved.

Skeleton Bone Puzzle for Anatomy Class

My A&P group loves play a game we call skeleton puzzle. We have a big box of bones we dump out and then have the students identify the bones and reconstruct the skeleton like a puzzle. It has been an amazing tool to have the students remember the names, shapes, sizes and locations of the bones : )

Making Learning Fun

The school I teach at had the instructors play a Jeopardy like game to quiz us on our school knowledge. I then took the idea into my classroom to utilize it as quiz preperation and review. Student feedback was positive about the fun component helped them be more motivated and involved and helped them to retain the information longer.

Visual Aids/Props

For teaching veterinary technology, we use stuffed animals to identify anatomical locations, bandaging labs, placing muzzles, etc. The students name the animals and it really seems to help them remember the terminology in a fun way!

Creating long term learning

If student's retain 90% of the information when reading or seeing the material 6 times, how can we garantee it will happen in the time frame that we have to teach a course (5 weeks)?

Visual learning

I like the exercise involving the drawing of pictures related to the terms - I will have to work on my drawing skills to make it effective though!

Crossword Puzzles and word search

I have used crossword puzzles and word search in the class before. I also use word part cards, not for the matching, but to make words with the different parts.

Activities

In our class room we use a Jeopardy format and divide the room into teams - Students sem to like the activity and will usually request it. They also like to take the word part cards and make as many terms as they can in a given timeframe. some of the words they come up with can be interesting.

Classroom Participation

The information on the long and short term memory will be valuable in engaging the class more effectively.

crossword puzzles

crossword puzzles are great as an ice breaker as well. However, I did not know there was a software until the publisher sent me to the website. this is a great tool for learning and studying words and their meaning.

what game is best to use

games are great to use because it gets everyone involved, but my concern is some students will become to competitive in the game as though the game is more serious than answering the questions correctly. How do you make others feel at ease when they are not comfortable with sports?

Reiterate

I reiterate information over and over, because I believe that when you give the same information over again but in different formats, students will retain it better. In addition, it allow them to make reference to the everyday scenarios.
