I would like to agree with you on a 100% basis, but I tend to belief that more than a understanding of the institution's mission faculty's behavior is greatly influence by their cultural and social make-up. It sounds very negative but the reality is that we look at other people in the light of our beliefs and prejudices. Everything else aside we can find from time to time individuals within all segments of the institution that rise to the level of great mentors (educators) regardless of the quality of the student they receive as part of the admission process. I do sincerely belief that educational institutions need to created a learning environment targeted at staff and faculty; a climate in which students, staff, and faculty of diverse cultures are treated as equals and not as strangers. It is extrenmely difficult to understand when faculty members question the quality and type of students recruited by the admissions department just because the students bring a new set of situations or personal problems never seing before in the institution. The future of higher education institutions in the United States is not any longer in the hands of a few, but in the… >>>

It feels so strange but just a few days ago a couple of my students told me about how they will like to be as successful as I am. They were talking about my abilities as a model, mentor, and monitor. I was taken by their comments without realizing my role. The actions of faculty and staff are extremely important when it comes to retention. The time and dedication we spend with our students exhert a great deal of positive influence when the student is considering leaving school. The success or failure of the institution is on the hands of… >>>

I am a culinary arts instructor, most recently during my lectures I am placingan emphasis in presenting information to my students in various ways. I am still amaze by the result obtain by my students on their quizzes and tests. My question: Even is the delivery methods are varied, are other external or internal influences may affect the individual learning process?
Hello Dr. Meers, I am not considering compromising the college, but rather to have the organizational knowledge that will enable the instructor to direct the student(s)to the correct source within the institution in order to get assistance. For example by knowing the inner workings of financial aid I had been able to direct students through the application process for various grants and scholarships. Students are happier and I had gained their respect, admiration, and more important their attention during lectures.
Non-Traditional learners are greatly affected by what we call "life events" by our campus administrators. The vast majority of non-traditional learners have good intentions and goals about their education, but many of them will never reach their educational goals due to external issues or situations. Usually, related to family, work or lack of thereof or other more personal issues. My question: Should the instructor show emphaty and try to help the students in reaching their goals by using all tools within the educational organization?

A little over three years ago I was hired to start a new program with my present employer. I was a rather tall order due to the fact that it was a program to be deliver in Spanish. After countless hours of translation and reviews we finally implemented the new program. To my personal and professional pride today that program as a Hispanic that program has a retention rate of 86% even better than the overall institution retention rate.

We attribute that success to the fact that the instructors and I keep constant contact with all the students in the… >>>
