When a student comes to an instructor with a personal problem, the usual response is something like,"I really can't get involved with that." Unfortunatly, more than not, it is because they do not care. If more instructors would care enough to at least direct the student to the right department, AND follow up with someone in that department, it would go a long way towards lowering the withdrawal rate.
There are times, when we have our lesson plan laid out to the minute, and then disaster. As Instructors, we need to be prepaared for these times. If we are not, our credibility can be compromised, and the students most likely are deprived of the total content of the course, which means they have a bad experiendce. This is not acceptable in our profession.
When you are presenting subject matter to the class,if some do not understand what you are giving them, you have to try to be aware of the "I dont understand" look that comes over their face, and get them to question what you said. We, as instructors, are not mind readers, but, we usually can tell is a student is not getting it. We have to get through to the students that it is ok to ask questions when the do not understand what the instructor has just laid before them.
