We use an internet based education site that provides questions in a number of different areas within our field. The students must complete each module with a passing score to move on. It ia accessed anytime and anywhere, so students can work at the site from home (homework) or at school if time allows.
I will use PowerPoint when I need to stimulate my visual learners. I will have my students work in groups using the internet to fine material that will enhance their presentations, this will help my kinesthetic learners. My audio learners can use the media using tutorials that address the criteria for their presentations.
I agree, by creating my own PowerPoints I can more clearly stay within the boundaries of my lesson plans.
I intergrate technology into my course with field trips. The students enjoy going out into the field that they will be working in and seeing how it works up close.
I utilize computer simulation programs that allow students to interact with the body system I am teaching about.
Using PowerPoint Presentation and white boards during lectures and having the students come up and fill in the diagrams. I build games such as Jeopardy, Family Feud, and virtual surgical procedures on the WII for the particular lesson. There are so many different ways technology can be incorporated and make it fun while students are learning.
Being an online class, it's sometimes difficult to "show" new technology things while in class. Although there is a white board used to interaxt and I try to make it as interesting as possible by changing it up every day. I've also intentionally misspelled words to see if the students catch and sometimes will ask at the end of the week what was found. I also find websites for the students to look up and research.
I use power point presentation and then try to find resource or videos about that topic. This is also beneficial for clinical students
George,
Do you receive a higher response rate (by using Facebook), than using the student portal or assigning the questions as homework?
Tremayne Simpson
I have done the occasional phone in your answer survey, just to break up the class and have a little fun. I use powerpoints and have them create their own presentations to teach the class a particular subject.
Field trips to actually see the EMRs in reality, not just in theory. It makes the concept real by application. Also, student run and work a mock lab for 18 weeks of their 18 month program.
Hello all
It is impressive to see how today's technology helps in the learning process, there are many ways to incorporate technology in fact the current school systems often have websites where the class schedule, assessments, are forums to discuss issues of class, gets all information, notes, sylabus, tasks, software for training there, which certainly help a lot in practical classes, we can also use technology to search for and then group discussions.

I use Youtube after some of our Clinic lectures to look through some lab skills before and after we go to the Lab. Not only do I pull up videos that are accurate but also ones that are problematic and as a class we discuss what is being done wrong and/or right. Our keyboarding course is done entirley on the computer with a software as well as learning how to work on electronic health records. In preparation for their final certifcation exam, the students access free online tests which provide instant scores and rationales on what they missed.
I use PowerPoint but sparingly. I believe the phrase "death by PowerPoint" I try to keep each slide simple with very few words on each slide. The students must therefore be engaged, pay attention and take notes. I find that when I write things on the black or white board the students feel they are in "real time" and not just watching a slideshow in the dark.
I don’t have the sources that can bring me the newest technology that are used in what I am teaching in the class but I always keep up with what is new out there by magazines news papers and so on. I make sure that my students know what is out there even I don’t have it in my class.
I use power points on a regular basis. I also use the internet to demonstrate what we have been discussing in class. I just started using a polling site where the student use thier cell phones to answer questions. All of this has helped with student interaction and participation.
I teach directly from a mac mini which is connected to a big screen lcd television.
I sometimes write out my lecture notes and then type them into a word doc on the big screen and have students follow along and discuss topics. They then usually do exercises on their laptops, video editing or web design. They will then pass those web pages or videos via Airdrop to the class mac mini and we will look at the videos/webpages as a class and evaluate them.
Jim,
Excellent methods for integrating technology! Whenever possible, it is a great idea to enable students to use their personal electronics during the class session. This naturally produces more student participation from the class.

I'm an IT instructor, so I have lots of technology to work with. Where appropriate I have students tear down computers and laptops and then put them back together. If they don't work after reassembling them, they all get a chance to troubleshoot what went wrong. In some classes, students install operating systems in virtual machines in which they can install software to experiment with. In other classes, students get to configure routers, switches, and servers. Like many here, I also use powerpoints and videos as instructional aids.
Kathryn,
I agree that an "oversaturation" of PowerPoint can negatively affect student engagement in the class session. It has to be segmented, with opportunities for students to interact and discuss the content.
