Active Learning in a Clinical Environment
I currently teach in a clinical setting and active learning is by far the best way to put all of the didactic material to practice. Critical and analytical thinking must be used at all times. The first half of our program provides a lot of information that that is not used daily until the students begin in the clinical setting. The best active learning tools in the first part of the program include simulation and role-play. By the time the students are in clinic they must think critically and analytically everyday when it comes to putting the knowledge they have acquired to work with an actual patient.
Hi Courtney,
Great setup! You are really preparing your students for the real world. Students love it when they are allowed to do things in the classroom that they will be doing in the real world.

We have incorporated both instructions (Lecture) and simulations in our clinical and administration settings. This allows the students to apply their understanding of procedures that they are required to master before completing the program. The simulation will often present skills in a different manner than the instructor, which allows students to see different ways certain procedures will be performed.
Hi Corliss,
Great! Students are able to better understand how things are in the real world through the use of simulations. Simulations also allow students to utilize their critical/analytical skills.
