Motivation
Motivation is a major component in a students educational skill set. The Instructor must be aware of those students who require extensive and continual motivation.
I think motivation involves much more than simply telling students "great job." First of all, we need to communicate with our students to get to know what their career goals are.
I agree with "The Instructor must be aware of those students who require extensive and continual motivation." In order to accomplish this, instructors need help from other administrative areas (Student Services?) who have prior knowledge regarding a certain student's prior condition (e.g. AADD).
students need tobe motivated every minute of the time we spend with them.it always needs to stay positive
I agree that motivation is important as well as building confidence which with some students in the clinical area (hands on) is not mutually exclusive. It goes back to being book smart but application is hesitant. This takes up time but the rewards for the student last a career. The conflict that I find is when it is backwards. The application or bedside manner is acceptable, however the education or ability to see the "big picture" is difficult for the student. My question is, I am always looking for new ideas, techniques for developing critical thinking skills with my students, any ideas?
Hi Kirstan,
Good question. This is a challenge for many of us in education. My approach has been to use a lot of case studies where students individually and in groups work through the studies to come up with possible solutions. By assigning the case study to the entire class and then putting them into groups of 4-6 students, the entire class gets to hear different ideas about the case. This helps them to think more holistically about different situations. So in combination with their clinical skills they start to expand their critical thinking skills.

Motivation is a big one for me. I've found that it depends on the student. Most are motivate, while some are not. I focus in on those Mass group.
I agree to focus the motivation to the mass group, however when the when I see that there is a trend with a few I make an assumption that this may be an ongoing issue with the group and address it in post conference. I also have addressed individuals personally to ensure there momentum.
Hi Kirstan,
The individual attention can make a big difference in the motivation of a student. By having the instructor chat with them for a few minutes or inquire about their work can really get them excited about completing their projects and the course.
