ED 101
It is very important to prepare for the subject before it is taught. This will prepare the instructor and have better time management.
This is very true, and there is no one-size-fits-all preparation. Each class needs its own tweaking of your basic lesson plans.
Absolutely true. The instructor has to be flexible as each group of students presents different strengths and weaknesses.
Paul,
Not sure what you mean by "one size fits all" preparation because that is not an approach that works in most situations. Even with a standardized curriculum there is a need to personalize it based upon the demographics of your students and your instructional style. There are standard steps that are followed in lesson planning but once that is completed then the instructor can insert examples, case studies, guest speakers or any other way of getting the content across to the students.

Jaimee,
This is one of the challenges but also one of the rewards because each class is different, with different personalities and different perspectives. I teach five sections of the same course and each one is so different so I never get bored presenting the same content because the unique personalities that are represented.

Gary, I understand your point. The personalities in each class and there perspective very the direction that lesson takes. Then I have to steer back to my lesson but keep it fluid. This can be quite a challenge sometimes, but it makes it fun. The same class has different personalities that emerge on different days as well.
GEOFFREY,
So true and this is one of the advantages when teaching multiple sections of the same course. I currently teach five sections of the same course so with each having a unique personality I am able to bring specific strategies and activities to each section and remember what I have shared with each section.

I am a new instructor and I usually arrive 30 minutes before class begins to prep but I do as much of my preparation and planning at home. I find it is less stressful that way.
