Need for relevancy

Students want to see that what you are lecturing on or talking about has a direct relationship to their objective and course. Give them a WHIFM.

I think the best way of doing that is to give them working examples of what they are learning so they can see how what they are learning is being used in there area of study

Cory,
The more examples you can give them that tie to the content the more value they will associate with the course. In addition their motivation levels increase because they can see the relevancy of what is being taught.

I have instructed the students and find that taking the students in small groups and bringing them into a working dental office and show them what is being done and what is expected, works the best for me.

Michael,
This approach makes their school work come alive. They can see where they are going to work once they have successfully completed their training. Talk about a great motivator. This is it.

I think that the more you can show students that what they're learning is relevent to what they are going to be doing then the more they are going to be interested in learning the topic. Students show less attention when they don't think it's relevent to them.

Ashley,
Relevancy and application are two elements of instruction that needs to be incorporated into all planning and delivery by instructors.
