creating their own study guide
Before I start a new topic I have the students answer the bullet points on the overview page and write down the page number where they found their answers. This will ensure that they have opened their books and the page reference is a good study guide.

I do something similar: for every subject in my class, I create a quiz that, once completed and graded, will be a study guide for the test. They are allowed to use their notes and book on this quiz. It contains a mixture of simple fill-in-the-blank questions and harder analytic questions in which the students must read a realistic scenario and then write a brief essay explaining how the concepts they've learned apply to the scenario.
Hi Edward, Thanks for your post to the forum. I also have my students use their reviewed quizzes as study guides for their exams. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I agree, I teach Critical Thinking. Every chapter, I have a study guide which contains a list of terms and chapter highlights in question form. On exam day, students take their exam followed by a break. The remainder of the class time the students are allowed to complete the study guide for the next chapter. I return at the end of class and stamp their completed study guides. Study guide sheets with the correct stamp on them are turned in on exam day & stapled to the back of the exam for 5-10 extra credit points. This procedure seems to work well...It gets the student into the chapter before I lecture...which facilitates greater student particpation & better class discussions.
