Socratic

I have used questioning before but actually using them in this method is awsome. I used in a class today and the engagement was amasing.

I used the questioning all the time and the students love it

Hi everyone, I am an instructor in training at a trade school. I haven't taught in a class room yet, but before I came to the school, I was "the old guy" in the shop. I was the guy that the young mechanics came to with questions, and I really enjoyed using these types of questions because it made/helped these guys to solve the problem at hand by drawing on their own training and experience. Sometimes people just need a little nudge in the right direction to find information they already have stored in their head, and to use it to build new knowledge or to solve problems. as a youngster, this is how my father taught me the lessons that really stuck.

Hi Michael - Welcome to ED 103! Experience can often be the equivalent of "book-learning"! Best wishes for success in your teaching career! Susan

So true. Sometimes that 'nudge' comes in the form of just being asked the right question too!

In my Critical Thinking class, I assign a research paper on the topic of Group Think. Student must define the term and find 3 examples in cults , genocide,& etc.( historic events)
On the day they turn their research papers in, I place the seats in a circle & conduct a Socratic Forum...
I have a list of higher level thinking questions about the topic. Using a nerf football students take turns responding to the questions & they use their papers as examples to support their arguments. I am always amazed at the heated out come of the discusion...and the depth of the reasoning the students have arrived ...Really love Socratic questioning!

Hi Leigh, Thanks for sharing an excellent example of the use of a Socratic Forum! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
