Evaluating Success
What role does exams play in detrmining success?
Hi Trevor - I am not sure about your question. Can you clarify?
Apart from exams what other criteria can be used to determine student success.
Hi Trevor - Thanks for your post to the forum. Good question! I like to have students demonstrate application of what they have learned. Presentations, Case studies, Debates etc. are all good ways to determine whether students have a good grasp of our lessons. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Exams serve well to asses the material retention level of most students but does not work well for a select few. Is this what you were getting at with your post?
Case studies are a great way to gage the information the student has learned.
Anthony, I agree with you case studies are great for to gage information from students. I've used this technique more times than not.
What do you do with a student that has an IEP?
Hi Craig, If you mean an Individualized Education Plan - it will usually detail the accomodations that the student requires. For example, the student may require additional testing time or may need to have tests read to him/her. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Exams are great for finding out how much of the material taught by the instructor and read by the student is retained by the student. I don't believe that exams should be designed for students to fail. Instead, exams should be designed so that students are able to answer the questions as a measurement of how much information they retained.
Hi Michhael, Thank you for that very important comment about the purpose of exams. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

When appying exams they should give the proper feedback for the instructor to know where the students need help or extra assesment. Being creative with testing is also a help for students because individuals learn differently for ex; one part multiple and the other hands on..
I agree with this approach because it allows them to apply there knowledge by answering the question to make it correct. That often makes them develop better study habits and apply what they have learned.
Hi Jamie,Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree and this is why I always do a review of tests and quizzes so that my students can learn from their mistakes. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Case studies encourage the students to think outside the box. They can apply what they have learned to a real life situation.
Hi Jackie, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes,we need to use any technique that can help our students see the relevance of what they are learning. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

by having multiple types of questions on your exam, multiple choice, short answer, fill-in-the-blank, matching, etc, you give students with different learning styles what they need. since it is not possible to give individual tests to each student, this helps gauge what they have learned and retained.
Hi Julie, Thanks for your post to the forum. Using mutiple testing formats is usually the best choice to address the learning styles.
