Reading comprehension

I have noticed a large # of our students have trouble understanding the questions becaue their vocabulary is limited. Once they have the question read or rephrased to them, they understand what is being asked.

Hi Michael - is this because the students are ESL? Thanks - Susan

The brain is like a muscle in that the momoe you read the more you comprehend. I always say visulize what your reading.

I have had students with readings problems, but in some cases it was from a physical problem with eye sight.

I agree that if the vocabulary is difficult in the reading or the style of the writing is difficult to understand, the learner will get frustrated with the reading assignments. That is why the teacher needs to break down the information into a content to help the student.

HI Brian - Good point! Often we tend to just give the reading assignments and assume that they will be OK with them. As you mention, that is not always the case. We need to always check for understanding of the materials we assign. Thanks for your post! Susan
