Note taking
My students rarely take notes. I provide a study sheet before an exam? Should I stop doing this to encourage note taking?
I sometimes have a problem with note-taking as well. It might be effective to provide outlines of your lecture for them to fill in throughout the class period. Spaces for key terms and definitions, fill-in-the-blank statements, and room for their own notes might encourage them to keep up with what you are teaching and not wait till the last moment with the study sheets!
Mary,
these are good ideas & can also be balanced with straight talking without the use of the aids as this way they learn to track & listen for notes on their own.

I've used this in my freshman classes, and while they might groan at it, for the most part the ones that fill it out do better than the ones that don't.
