Students that are unable to read
I work with an instructor that had a student in her class that could not read. I have never personally experienced this, but how would one help this student?
Sherrie,
I would encourage the student to seek out help from a tutor. There are many good, free literacy programs available. It may also be a situation in which the student should withdraw for the time being, develop the literacy skills & then reenroll.

had to have a student take reading classes first before retaking my class
Andrew,
yes, unfortunately this happens, but there are many free literacy programs available to help these students.

I have had students that can,t read and usually they get tutoring befroe they could continue
From my personal experience, I was one of the students having a hard time reading, and still do. But what helped me become a better reader, and what made me want to read was my love for snowboarding. The magazine articles about where the best snow was, who the new best athlete was, or what the latest gear was made me want to read more! And it than became fun, something that I wanted to do for me and not for the teachers in school.
Jacob,
a great example of helping students find something they enjoy reading about & then helping them transfer those skills.

A lot of reading comprehension is up to the individual, they have to want to learn in order to be effective and overcome their disablity
Camille,
this is true & we must do what we can to stimulate that desire & enthusiasm for learning & reading.

Yeah we had several students in our class that could not read and they could not do the math. we were told that students have to take a comprehension exam to be enrolled in the course so my question is what happened? Makes it tough for instructors to teach and tutor
Jaceita,
unfortunately when these break downs in the system happen the burden is thrust onto the instructors.
