Quiz Me

I give a lot of quizzes and with anatomy I give sections of the body to color and write in the word parts-medical. I do review and give them a heads up for when the test is coming. I do multi media where I may show a heart transplant and then we talk about it. It gives them a chance to use their medical terminology. I also do tutor my slower ones and help them with spelling. What other methods do others use for retention?

I have Anatomy twice a week for two hours. I will lecture the first class and assign work (along with multimedia, handouts, etc). The next class I will ask them questions (similar to the ones on the exam). We call it rapid fire. They have a certain amount of time to answer the question and if they cannot get the answer, they can "call" a friend. This makes them accountable for studying the material.

Elinore,
This sounds like a fun way to review the material and get the students up to speed for the day's class. Thanks for sharing this strategy with us. I know it will be of help to other instructors.

qizzes help keep the students focused on work and communicate with me, the instructor, what stuck and what we need to circle back on again.

I do the same here givivng quizes on multipe occasions throughout class to see where we are in regards to content covered and retained learnt

Jonathan,
These are good ways to check for understanding. The results will show you where you need to make adjustments to make sure the students are getting the content.

I like to give quizzes as well. It lets me know where my students lie in the learning process and where I need to review. I also like to play jeopardy. I find it really helps with retention of knowledge and it's entertaining as well. It helps to break up some of the monotony of just straight lecturing and powerpoint presentations.

Courtney,
I do the same with my classes. Playing games for review really gets the students involved and they enjoy the fact that they learn they know more than they think they do plus they get pieces of candy and they really like that.

Excellent use of quizzes Pamela. In my Java programming class, we have weekly quizzes on the content in the form of a friendly two team competition. It is quite surprising how the students are motivated to learn the content.

I don't like testing so much, one my type of student freeze when it comes to a test. Two I find most educationalist have a hard time sticking to the material at hand. Maybe if we teach what we are testing on it would not be so bad.

Bob,
What is the format you use with your students to assess their educational growth and knowledge acquisition?
