Kolb and the Whole Brain Theory

Kolb provided us with insight into the different types of personality. He created a four-quadrant model as well; including ways we sense, perceive and respond to external stimuli. He thought there were Thinkers, Watchers, Feelers and Doers. In my psych class I ask the class to write down which combination(s) they are and then do an inventory to see if there responses match their notions of their personality. It got me thinking, how much of what theorists assign to the left brain or right brain might be more of a process of the mind i.e. the development of the personality and how you approach problem solving?

David,

Having students predict the result of a personality assessment before they take it is a good teching technique. I think it would take a Psychologist to answer your question regrading problem solving.

I have my students complete a right brain/left brain exercise for psychology class. They all agree that there are to many variables to life situations to receive a textbook answer. But we do have fun with it.

Thanks

Bonnie,

These type of studies are fun and, in some cases, revealing. They are great tools as icebreakers.

I am glad you work in terms of combinations. I teach a film class and in this class everything is a work of combinations. You use as many skills as you can to get a task accomplished. You think, but then you do. You work with people so you have to relate. And you need to pay attention to all the goings on.

Jaye,

What are the best activities you plan for your students to require them to function at various levels within teams?

Jeffrey Schillinger

I think by getting to know your students asking basic questions of why they have chosen this career path, what their goals are, and even taking a personality test at the beginning of the semester could help me relate to them better. I remember doing a personality test when I started a new job and they would share with each employee the personlity types that they were I felt this was a helpful way of relating to one another.

Kimberly,

Students usually like taking these types of tests. It is important that we remind the students not to pigeonhole or stereotype based on the results.
