Prior Knowledge misconceptions.

Students comes to class sometimes with a lot of misconceptions about a course. Do the instructor have take the pain to know most of the misconceptions?

For the older adult student who may have experience in the field, and I teach in medical, so I will use this example; the student may think that the course will be easy because of their prior or current experience, however, keeping this student motivated in the course may be difficult, however, I find to keep this student motivated is by using them as a one to bring in experience and then by motivating the student by showing by lecture and example how past experience is great, but also that there is always something new or a different way to do a skill in the medical field.

I try to address the misconceptions, but my goal is to outline and describe the course on day one so that students know exactly what the course is about. As we go through the course, I try to integrate the knowledge from other classes and settings so students know where information should fit in the learning/applied continuum.
