Using experience to motivate
This module was of great value to me, I am new to teaching but have over 25 years experience in the field. With practice these tactics will enable me to use what I have learned in the most effective manner.
I love to use stories of my experiences to motivate my class. A true life story lets them see how what we learn in the class room really works in the field. A story also gives us a chance to relate to our students and a person and not just the instructor reading a script
I am also fairly new at teaching, I teach at the career college that I went to. Before becoming a teacher I was a corporate trainer in the upscale hospitality industry. I quickly realized by just bringing in the strategies I created in corporate world into classroom world I became a much better instructor.
I agree, by telling stories that are related to the curriculum, you can show how learning what you are trying to teach can help the down the road.
Hi Donald,
By sharing your experiences in the career field you are showing how the content of the course will be applied in the future. This builds a base of relevancy for the students.
Gary
When you use stories that students can relate to, it provides a better understanding of the lesson being taught.
Marvin, I agree that life experiences provide the arena in which students not only accept that we are believable but how it applies to the book material they are learning. It is important to show the relevancy of the material with the life experiences and not that you are a show off.
Sharing some past experiences to demonstrate the value of the course can keep the class alert as well as reinforce thier commitment to master the information.
Student constantly question and test the instructors in regards to their experience. Instructors need to be prepared to answer these questions in addition to providing real case scenarios to support their answers.
