Motivation in the classroom

Like many schools, we struggle at time with motivating students in general, as it pertains to their educational goals, and attendance. At had been my experience that a strict attendance policy is a must! If students are not in class, they cannot be educated. Students are motivated to attend classes as it is directly tied to attendance.

Hi Christy,
Good point about the need for an attendance policy to help get the students to class. If they feel attendance is optional they generally take the same attitude about their studies and are not successful. They need to be engaged in the learning process to the maximum extent possible.

In my opinion, it is imperative to immediately inform the student of how the class is going to apply to reaching their goals. It is also important for the previous instructor to remind the student of the importance of the class they are going into and create excitement. Many times if the student does not make it to the first day of class they never recover.

Hi Darrell,
You are so right about the students needing to see the value of what they are learning. If they don't then it is an up hill battle to keep the enrolled and continuing with their studies.
