What does the student expect to get out of the class
One thing that I do when my class starts on day one is a brief biography of myself. I then go atround the classroom and ask each student their name, where they are from and why are you here. This has been very helpfull in getting a good flow to the room.
Hi William,
The key is to get them talking and you are doing that with your method. Once they get comfortable with each other they will open up and the class will start to gel. That is when you start to see real progress with the students.

the first day of class is always the most important for establishing your expectations and rules. I actually visit my next incoming class and introduce myself with a upfront brief speach on how important it is to be there first day in full uniform and all equipment needed for the class. i have see great results with this method of getting everyone there and the mood has already been set.
Hi Jonathan,
I think this is a great idea. By coming in to the previous class the students get to meet you and this really helps to bridge to the next class. They know a bit about you and feel more comfortable about the class from the very first meeting.

I like the "why are you here?" question. Many are there because the class is required, but when that up front I can try to change their mind and make them glad they came!
Hi Ellen,
Isn't that a fun part of teaching? Convincing students that you have content that is valuable to them even though required that they can use in their lives and careers. I always enjoy the challenge of helping them learn this kind of material.

Interesting concept. I usually tell the class my background and then start on the material. I may try that next quarter to ask them why they are in the class and tyr to change the minds of those the say "its required".
