Entusiasm & Fun

An instructor's enthusiasm is a crucial factor in student motivation. If you become bored or apathetic, it won't be long before your students will soon be reflecting this same attitude. The old adage that states "we only reflect what we see" comes into play here.

Hi Denise,
Right you are. We cannot expect our students to be excited about the course if they see us only going through the motions of teaching rather than being excited about sharing our content.
Gary

No matter how I am feeling that day-the moment I walk in the classroom-I have a huge smile on my face and a warm welcoming! I like to get my students pumped for class...they all know that I love being there and it shows in how they respond to me. I am here for them and I make sure they know it. I love teaching!!!

I can be disorganized, tired, sick, frusstrated and nervous in my office in the morning, but when I pick up my books and walk out that office door, my walk is quick and bright and my confidence returns.

Hi Debbie,
Great way to show that you are a true professional at all times no matter what has occurred prior the start of class.
Gary

Enthusiasm and fun is so crucial to having a successful learning environment.

Although, one time my students told me that I was "too upbeat" for them. :)

I think overall, even if the subject matter is very dry, it is so vital to be excited about it.

It is so easy to get in a routine, but if you change things each time you teach a new group of students, that will help keep your enthusiasm going.

Hi Laura,
You make a number of very good points. The excitement about the subject one jumps out because we do need to be excited about our area. If we aren't it is for sure the students aren't going to be.
Gary

I'm on board with this. We must find ways to stay "fresh" even if has been months of the same subject.

I conduct the college prep course, therefore, it is my duty to be the reflection of "WELCOME to COLLEGE!". I am upbeat and energetic the entire class and constantly trying to build rapport and confidence. I try to let them know that I'm excited to have them aboard but do expect professionalism/greatness. Tell them that we are going to have fun but also going to get work done.

Hi Niecy,
What a great opportunity you have to set the stage for student success. I am sure they see the connection between your excitement and their future at the college.
Gary

Confidence, enthusiasm and fun are all going to help students feel comfortable from the start. It's imperative to exude these feelings, despite what is happened to us that day. I, too, agree with the majority on walking into a classroom and being your best and true self. I would like to add that a little humor puts students right at ease - nothing overboard or inappropriate of course.

I agree, with a huge smile entering the classroom and a good attude about the subject what you teaching on will help you to keep the students focused and interested each single day

when i begin the course i show my excitement and ask them what excites them..they give me much more to work with

I agree, it is passion, that we need to show every moment we are in the classroom. We all need to practice "conscious use of self"
