Providing personal attention to students

What is the most effective way to provide personal attention to students in a lab class where some students need more attention than the others. How do you ensure that the other students are not disgruntled?

I use the pair/share model of putting students into teams to work on a case study or problem. This way they benefit from the knowledge each student is bringing to the setting. This helps to keep them moving forward as a class.

friend of mine, who teaches a lot of hands on classes, came up with fabulous idea. She created a sign up sheet for students who have questions or need extra help during the class and followes the list; that immediately removes the issue.

I agree. As the class progresses I like to identify students with a solid grasp of the course content and encourage them to assist some of the students that may need additional assistance. I try not to do this too early on as it will usually take a bit of time to determine which students may be comfortable in either role.

This is a peer tutoring model that benefits all those involved. The student helping gets to share knowledge and the student receiving help gets to have the content explained in a another way that enables him or her to get the key concepts.
