Effective Learning
Adults tend to value their decision on coming back to school when they have pay for it on their own.
I think this is true. I feel that some young students because the money is not exchanged and they are not having to pay out of pocket lack the concept that this is an investment in their future. When you have to pay for it right away you understand it's value.

This is something that bugs me as well. Many of my students do not connect the courses they are taking with their future. Yes, they are paying to be there and yet they don't attend or do not do the work. When they fail they can't see to understand that paying tuition does not purchase an A in the course. A's have to be earned they are not gifted or purchased.

I see some students that will sign up for school just to collect a living expense check. It is hard to teach a student that wont read a word of the provided text.

I have these students at different times as well and they do challenge me. What I have learned to do is offer them the same courtesy as I offer all my students but I focus my efforts on those students that want to learn. I will not let the disinterested students distract from what I am doing in the class. At the end of the course they get the grade they have earned - an F - and enjoy the learning that has occurred with the dedicated students.
