New Course Preparation
It really does save time to ask fellow instructors for their course materials and then streamline them for your course. Then, you have time to modify the materials to accomodate your style of teaching.
It is important that all instructors, follow the syslibus that was given to them from the campus director.
I found that if you talk to fellow instructors you will get different I deas and good information. Then you can out waht you receive and personalise it for your own needs.
Kevin, Yes, if your administration has a strict policy about your course syllabus, then it's important to work with it. However, if you see efficiencies and you know there's flexibility, it's ok to voice your opinion and champion change.

Michael, So true! Your fellow instructors likely have a lot of resources on hand that you can leverage. Reaching out and finding out what kinds of materials others have can be a tremendous help. I recommend even reaching out to instructors who are at your teaching level and below your level. You simply never know where the best learning will come from.

When I first started as an instructor I was so green and didn't even think about asking for help.I just thought it was my responsibility to do it all on my own.One day I just asked one of the other instructors a simple question and it opened pandora box.He told me I eas reinventing the wheel and I should ask whoever has taught this same course. This changed my whole life as an instructor.Other instructors have so much to bring to the table and this lowers your stress factor and helps you to be a good instructor which benefits your students. And do course you should do the same and tell new instructors before they make the same mistake I did.
I thought this module gave some very good insight as to how to gather information for new course material. I am new to teaching and at this time only teach in a clinical setting. I have been hesitant to step up to lecture teaching because I thought the preperation would be overwhelming but I can now see that there are many sources to help one design and implement the appropriate course curriculum and material.
Lori, I'm so glad to hear this. Yes, there are so many great resources already available for new instructors. Text book instructors as well as your colleagues probably have lots of material already on file. All it takes is reaching out and getting ramped up on what they already have.
