Are you keeping students attention?

If you students are asking questions about something you have said, or are getting involved in the discussion by offering their opinions, and wanting to challenge someone else's opinion.

This is a situation in which you can lose the attention of the students if it is not monitored by the teacher. I think it is a good idea for a teacher to use this in class for it gets other students to think and speak in which other times they would not. For by other students asking questions or making comments it gets others to think and react as well. But as the teacher you must, like I stated earlier monitor the progress of the discussion and bring them back around to your inital point or question that begins the group discussion. I have been teaching high school for 11 years in four different schools, and it is all the same to get them involved and the class and material being discussed will become apparent and enlightening to the students. And is that not we are here to do enlighten the students and make them think.

I would say I am for the following reasons. They ask questions and we have good discussions about things I lecture on with them. One course I teach, I have 22 plus years experience in it, so the information I give them is practical real life information and not just theory.

Hi Ronald,
It sounds like you are keeping your students attention. Your students are very fortunate to have you as their instructor because you can bring book theory to real life.

Patricia Scales

Thank you for those words of encouragement. It gives the student a look at how the working environment works as oppossed to theory from the books.

Sometimes it is hard to keep their attention, mostly depending on the subject matter that is being taught for that day, week, etc. I try to engage the students in real world applications of the material that is being taught and most times it keeps them focused and on track to where I want them to be.

Hi Ronald,
Book theory brings about knowledge of course, but there is nothing like applying what you have learned in the real work setting. Students enjoy hearing stories as they apply to the real world.

Hi Kenneth,
When students understand that what they are learning will be applied on the job, they gain more of an interest in the course.

Patricia Scales

I find that asking students questions during lecture helps to pinpoint their understanding of the material and also gives them the opportunity to share their views on the subject matter.

I find that allowing student discussion and opinions help them to stay involved and it often helps them apply content to everyday living.

Hi Elizabeth,
Students want to know that their input matters and will have more of an interest in the course if their input is welcomed.

Patricia Scales

Yes they will take a more and in depth interest in the course if it shows applicable skills to their prospected job related field of study. By taking an in depth interest they will begin to gain a deeper understanding of the material.
