"Center Stage" students

I try to ask CSS to be my assistant and help guide that day's class.

I normally ask the student to be observant as they usually are missinformed about things and the constant incorrect statements they make wear on the entire class.

Hi Scott,
Do not let one bad apple spoil the whole bunch.

Patricia Scales

Ah yes, but when that bad apple rest upon others in the basket, all the apples spoil.

Hi Scott,
You are right! As an instructor, do not let the bad apple rest so that is spoils the other apples. Remove the bad apple from the basket so that the others do not become spoiled.

Patricia Scales

Agreed! Bad apples are like cancer, cut them off or watch them spread.

Hi Amy,

I concur! If students are bad apples, remove them.

I believe if you do not deal with this type of student or any other types it can lead to students giving up or make them feel taht they are not wanted and quit school.

I currently have one of these fabulous students in my class. I did get a heads up from her classmates prior to our class starting they came to me a few days before they began class with me to express their frustrations with the individual and they stated previous instructors did various methods to help control her (making her the observer, speaking with her after class) and nothing helped. On my first day of class I began with my expectations and added that while I know everyone has had personal experiences that they feel are relevant to the course material I do not want to be interuppted during my lecture to have story time. Unfortunately this did not work with this student as she had a story for just about every disease we discussed the first day, so I pulled her to the side explained in so many words that she is a distraction and her classmates are not paying to hear her lecture they pay to hear me and if the constant interruptions continue I will dismiss her from my class. So far this seems to have worked. I hated being this stern with her, but I would have never finished a chapter and the other students were suffering.

I have my stuidents for 18months. From day one, I make them understand that this is "my" classroom and there presence there is dependant upon their behavior. They sign student codes of conduct and are expected to be in proper dress code. Violaters cannot attend class but are still responsible for content. You must set the rules early and STICK to them.

when I started teaching I realized that when I was is school I was one of those CSS students. I am just naturally a chatty person. I was lucky to have instructors who worked with me an use my eagerness in positive ways, often pairing with a quiet student that was struggling, because I had no fear of speaking up and asking the questions or explaining to them the concept if I got it.

Hi Rebecca,
You certainly should know how to deal with the CSS student. You have walked in their shoes and you know what works.
