New Instructor
I felt overwhelmed when I first started teaching, however, I made adjustments very quickly by preparing myself before class started and arriving early eased my nervousness. Also reading over the material is very important to ensure that you know what you are talking about.
I 100% agree, I work at a school where we teach a different subject matter each week pertaining to the program. So sometimes we rotate and have to teach a class we haven't taught before. I find if I take even one hour to look over the material and arrive an hour early before the class I have time to relax and get ready and make notes about what I want to accomplish during the class time. It took me a couple of classes to get my routine down.
Hi David,
Preparation is key! Everyone suffers when the instructor is not prepared, but more importantly it hurts the students.

I talked so much my first class that I lectured through the class break and didn't know it.
Hi Keith,
I chuckled when I read your response because I am typical of this as well. This means you are really into the lecture.

Yes - It is vitaly important for the instructor to be prepared to teach the class. Being a new instructor myself, I had to make sure that I was prepared for my lectures and had to also read the book that the students were using. If you aren't familiar with the course content, then you also have to do your homework.
Hi Tara,
You are right! As an instructor(new/old), you are going to have homework so that you can prepare for your lessons. Preparation is key!

I too was overwhelmed on my first day of teaching. Prior to coming to class I read the lecture material as well as took notes in preparation for my intended lecture. I also used power point materials as well. I find that coming in early gives you a chance to settle down coming in from my long drive to class. PREPARATION is always key when you are the new kid on the block.
