OMG

That first day can definitely be an OMG moment. relax and be honest with your students and yourself. Be prepared.

My first week was nerve racking. Then I realized I knew the answer to all the questions my students had. It deffinately helps to be prepared.

Hi Robert,
Preparation is key! Things can go a lot smoother when you are prepared.

Hi Joshua,
Preparation is the only way! Just always remember you know more about the subject matter than any student in the room.

Agree. Preparation is key not only to calm nerves but to establish the authority for the class and to move the class in the right direction, building momementum

Knowing the syllabus and looking over what you will be instructing the first days of class can give you a boost in self confidence when teaching a course for the first time.

Hi David,
Preparation is key! Students do not like for their instructor to be unprepared. It is not fair to the students when they instructor is not ready.

I agree with all of the replies. Even when I have taught the same class several times, I still take time to go over the material before I teach it. Maybe, I find a new trick or I see something I didn't see before. Preparation. It also shows when I lecture because I tend to talk about the next slide even before it come up. Then when the slide covers what I just talked about it reinforces that I know material and builds trust in that the information given is the right one.
