Class Particpation

I believe student should be self learner and take control of their learning. How I try to foster this as an instructor is to get everyone actively engage. One way is using craft sticks with students name on it and pull their name randomly. This keep everyone engaged because they never know when they will be called upon. It also foster class discussion and a cooperative learning environment.

Terry, I have not yet used craft sticks, but this is a fun, involving activity. Tank you for sharing this idea.

using craft sticks seems like a wonderful way to engage students in the learning process. One of the things I do is play hangman with different topics we have learned in class.

That sounds like a very good idea. I will have to try that in my class. It would seem to keep everyone on their toes.

This is a good idea, but The problem I have is with teaching adult learners they want to be treated like adults, and this might seem childish to them. I like the concept, but maybe a little more adult driven

I believe students should be some what is charge of the learning by being engaged. Having them be involved in group activities would be one way.

Troy, I like that you are recognizing the need all adult learners have for control and decision making in their learning.

I don't single students out for questions , but ask general questions to the class, or put them in groups and pose the questions to the groups. Everyone then has a chance to contibute to the group without feeling uncomfortable. This also challenges students knowledge and creates some competitive spirit.

John, using questions is an effective strategy if, as you describe, it is a safe environment to learn without embarrassment.

I have not used craft sticks but during review for the exam I put review questions into a bowl and have them pass the bowl around and draw out a question. The person has to read the question out loud and then answer. Usually this leads to discussion about the answer which helps them remember it for the test. If they miss the question I let anyone else in class answer it and then we discuss this or look it up if there is any question as to what the correct answer is.

Kimberly, Thank you for sharing how you review these important questions with your students.
