In my classroom I assess the knowledge that the students have learned by hands on labs, asking questions both by me and their questions, the process that the use in finding the answers on the computer or their notes or the discussions between the groups. There is also a written test that each student takes.
Kenneth,
How do you do this specifically? Which technology do you use?
Dr. Ruth Reynard
Robin,
Can students earn scores when they demonstrate successfully or only on the written tests?
Dr. Ruth Reynard
At certian intervals during the class asking qestions about topics covered before and have students give answers and also operations of differant componets. and tests.
Students earn a score in lab based on their performance of the project they are working on and how they understand what they have done in lab. They are required to explain their work and diagnosis. The written is a score based on correct answers.
I ask them to answer a question in their own words or to give an example of the concept.
michael,
Very true - creating an atmosphere of exploration is so important - and to have students find answers to their own questions and problems really enhances their learning. Great point!
Dr. Ruth Reynard
Ulises,
Yes, having students explain and question in their own words really enforces the learning and helps students retain what they learn. Excellent!
Dr. Ruth Reynard
Being able to access knowledge in many different forms of presenting material will help the student is being able to recall info. I will present the material in several ways write it on the board, make the copy the info, present videos to assist learning, and hand out props to have the hold and see what Im talking about. Test grades have improved.
Before the students leave each of their work stations they are required to discuss not just their answers and conclusions but how they arrived at that diagnosis. That way it is easy to tell if the student understands what he did but was the proper procedures followed.
Or students demonstrate these by performing hands on assesments that require them to retrive information from service publications, use spacialty tools and procedures to properly diagnose a customer concern on a live vehicle. they then complete a written assesment(test)where they research the answers to a 30 question test.
Knowledge assessment and understanding is usually demonstrated by doing lab tasks. The ability to do hands on and use critical thinking skills in diagnosis is a holistic type assessment.
allen,
Great ideas! Yes, providing various formats and inputs for content is so helpful for your students...
Dr. Ruth Reynard
David,
Great! Having students explain their findings helps to solidify the process and reinforce the meaning.
Dr. Ruth Reynard
by always being interactive with the class as we go through the lesson, asking questions and giving tests
Using essay questions in lab and in class such as how would the computor use this information to affect fuel delivery or timing. Why is this information important for us to know.
Lyle,
Yes, explanations and demonstration are both valuable in making sure students understand and can use new knowledge.
Dr. Ruth Reynard
James,
...and asking for students to explain and demonstrate to the class...various ways of "outputting" knowledge is key.
Dr. Ruth Reynard
William,
Can you clarify what you mean by "this information"? I;m not sure what you're referring to here...thanks.
Dr. Ruth Reynard
This information is referring to the scan tool data that is retreived from the computor in reference to the timing and fuel control of engine management for a good balance of emissions, fuel economy and performance
