Quiet Students
I find it intriguing that quiet students are found to be at higher risk. I'd love to see the studies that make this a fact, if possible. Anyone have references?
Thanks.
I would assume that the lack of communication makes it hard to gauge the interest of the student. Depending on the content of the discussion at hand, a simple "I agree" would be better than no response at all. Having some type of rapport/communication with the student might provide a little insight on the disposition of the student. This might give you a chance to motivate/save your student. Just a thought.
I don't like quiet students. I wish everyone would participate.
I find that the quiet students in a class situation might be at risk if they don't ask questions to things they do not understand. However in online classes you should have no fear about emailing the instructor and asking questions one on one. If the instructor is approachable I guess.
I too found this fact to be intriguing as I completed all my education on-line and found myself to be a back seater to much of the discusssion that I found to be a waste of time. I found out early on that the enviroment in the e-learning classrooms are no different than in a physical classroom. Students personalities will come out in both enviroments. As a e-learner instructor I can see those personalities as they communicate to their fellow classmates, and I have the ability to redirect conversations before things get out of hand.
I tend to enjoy interacting with the quiet student’s, as it challenges me as the professor to devise an effective plan on how to get that particular student to participate in the discussion boards. I know that when I was teaching on-ground, I would make sure that I address each student by their name when asking that they express their opinion about the topic being discussed. Of course, you have to make sure you make your way around the classroom so that it doesn’t appear that you’re targeting them.
