Engaging Learners | Origin: EL102

This is a general discussion forum for the following learning topic:

Online Teaching Techniques --> Engaging Learners

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

An avoidant student can easily become an unsuccessful student if a lack of interest persists. Identifying those students early and reaching out to them can be the difference between them passing or failing. With a lack of face-to-face interaction, early intervention is especially imperative for courses delivered solely online.

Asynchronous and synchronous discussions both can be effective online teaching strategies, but they need to be handled in different ways in order to be effective for the students.  Regardless, it is always important for the instructor to provide timely, positive feedback that also provides constructive criticism in a manner that allows the student to learn and grow.

Asynchronous is best with just one private student to assist with any private maters so they are not feeling discouraged etc.

Implications for synchronous vs asynchronous discussions were enlightening

I have learned that Synchronous discussions are best in smaller groups. The engagement is a bit more benificial for the students.

I plan to apply this by advocating for blended learning approaches in healthcare education—leveraging synchronous sessions for case discussions and hands-on training while using asynchronous resources like recorded lectures and self-paced modules for reinforcement. This balance ensures that all learners, regardless of their schedules or learning speeds, receive quality education.

To be gentle to slower learners.  To keep everyones dignity because we are all learning

Good communication skills and when they are done in a timely manner will help students of all abilities and skill sets.

I did not know the different types of learners. I will now be able to use that to ID any students who may have some trouble with the course

I have learned that I should provide mm=ore feed back to my asynchronous students.  and I needto be exterely clear on my Instructuons  uibstryctubsmubcludig dye datesmsoecuakeqyuoment, etc, extremely

My key takeaway is that online learning environments require increased written feedback to engage with all students in the absence of opportunities to give feedback more organically through nonverbal communication. Smaller group sizes are more conducive to higher levels of instructor interaction.

I believe that I will use both asynchronous and synchronous methods to create balance within my learning environment. It will help to make sure that the discussions within the online learning environment is the correct delivery and engagement for each student. I will most definitely use the asynchronous method because it will help me to navigate through the online learning styles.

in this module synchronous & asynchronous are both very important. We must be able to tell when to teach in one or the other teaching method. When we are in a synchronous method, everything is synchronized and we are able to show emotion. When we are in asynchronous method, we are able to fulfill the students who can’t keep up with the lesson and rather chat, or on a  different time zone , or maybe even a-foreign exchange student who needs extra guidance. Either way the message can be related.  However a asynchronous method does not always work when you’re teaching critical information.

I learned that initiating and managing synchronous discussions are best with one student- but no more than  5 or 6 at a time. Keeping the group small is easier to manage and gives more opportunites to connect with the students keeping them interested and knowing you care about their success.

Student participation is very important. It does not matter which an instructor may use; asynchronous or synchronous, they just need to reply to the students quickly and encourage them to participate.

Synchronous and asynchronous environments require different preparation and different tactics.

I teach both synchronous and asynchronous classes so the information was useful. The ideas for engaging in an asynchronous model were particularly helpful and will aid in connecting with students and enabling the learning process.

I have learned the difference between synchronous and asynchronous work. I also learned that using synchronous work as a method of reteaching is preferable.

In this module I learned how to engage adult student learners online and in person (asynchronus/synchronus). I can make my presence project by initiating and leading discussion boards. I can also post my picture alongside my discussion post and announcement. I learned that the golden standard for projecting my presence is posting a short video message accompanied by the script text in the video. A caution, never feel the need to respond to every post or comment made after the initial response. Never feel the need to remark on every comment made by students in the classroom in person.
