Re: effective communicaton

The instructor should investigate the different communication tools thoroughly. For example, if the wrong tool is selected this may cause a compromise in communication. Therefore, the communication process may not be complete and the message may not be delivered or understood completely, this would not be a good or effective way to communicate.

karen,

You are right. The communication tools much be investigated carefully and make sure they are appropriate for the students and the situation. Thanks for your input.

I'd also add that good ol' face-to-face communication also works for some students. It's the equivalent to a telephone conversation. At the end of class I will go over the weekly online assignment in front of the class....with the assignment itself on the video screens. I ask for questions, answer any that are asked then dismiss the class. It never fails that at least one student will approach me after class and ask me to explain it to them again. Selecting the right technology is essential for effective communication...including a one-to-one conversation.

Robert,

Yes, F2F communication is excellent and we have to take advantage of any communication we can do with our students. Keep up the good work.

I think that a variety of methods work best depending on the class and their capabilities.

Frank,

Variety is good in so many ways. Variety in teaching methods, variety of communication, variety in assessment, etc. Thanks for your input.
