I like to use the live chats as a way to establish verbal communication standards as well as remind and reinforce my presence to help them in anyway possible.

My first chat of every class is always focused intensely on explaining best practices re: communication with students. I have gotten praise for doing this.

I like a live session now and then to connect with the students and help clarify anything that needs to e clarified. Recording them is helpful to all students. Thanks.
I also use live chats. I do record them for students that do not attend, as they are not mandatory. However, it would be wonderful if the chats were made mandatory, at a specific time during the day, to hold students accountable. Even if it is not mandatory to attend live but to review the chat and send a summary. This could eliminate many of the questions that student have that do not attend or listen to the recorded session.
