Dr.Crews & thread:
The role of a rubric can be straightforward. It is an assessment tool that helps to evaluate if all the objectives have been met and it can also serve as a guide to know what to look for, in addition to knowing the student's participation. It can serve as an important tool in evaluating communication with learners and also their progress in the course.
I do agree that rubrics should be made available to the learners as they illustrate a guide to which what will be assessed in the activity. This can assist them in responding to a question (activity) and meeting the objectives.

The Rubric is a useful tool which allows students to have an idea of their expectations well before they begin studying the subject matter. It also allows the instructor to evaluate ALL assignments consistantly and objectively. The rubric helps the instructor support his/her evaluation of the students progress. No more "well nobody told me"
syndrome.
Su,
You are right on target. The key to rubrics is that it helps both the instructor and the students. Nice job.
Thanks for sharing.
James,
The consistency and objectivity of the rubrics is a key factor. I like the statement "well nobody told me" that the rubric can alleviate. Thanks!
I think the rubric is essential to providing guidelines for discussion posts. The more specific the rubric is the better the discussion posts will be. Also the discussion rubric is helpful for the instructor because it will provide greater structure when grading the discussions.
The rubric is especially helpful for new online students because it will help them understand the requirements.
Nicole,
While I agree with your post, we as instructors need to stress the purpose of the rubric. Too often students will simply look at the grade and move on. "Why" they received their grade is also important.
Karen,
Rubrics are essential in the learning process and help both students and instructors. And, new students can really benefit from them - your are correct. Thanks for your input.
Robert,
Good point. Helping them understand why the received the grade and why what they did was not correct is essential. too. Thanks for bringing this up.
Rubric gives specific guidelines on how assignments should be graded. This should be based on learning outcomes and objectives. This also gives student a firm foundation of how they are enhancing in the subject matter by having a tool to measure their performance by.

Muriel,
I love that you brought up the point about connecting the rubrics to the learning outcomes and objectives. This is essential.
Thanks!
The rubric is there so that students know what is expected of them, they feel empowered to do well. It is also there for consistency in grading so that instructor is consistent across the board, it also allows for good feedback and strong self-evaluation by students.
MeriAnn,
I like that you brought up the fact that rubrics help develop a strong self-evaluation by students. Many times people forget that. Thanks!
I feel the role of the rubric communicates to the students what they are expected to have in their assignment. It will show them what the instructor will be looking for and gives them a guideline to follow on how to get all the points for the assignments.
Rubrics have become popular with instructors as a means of communicating expectations for an assignment, providing focused feedback on works in progress, and grading assignments.
Rubrics are often used to grade student work but they can serve another, more important, role as well: Rubrics can teach as well as evaluate. When used as part of a formative, student-centered approach to assessment, rubrics have the potential to help students develop understanding and skill, as well as make dependable judgments about the quality of their own work.
Carolyn,
All true - and rubrics help the instructors grade more fairly and consistently. Rubrics are good for all involved in the learning process. Thank you.
Rhonda,
I think they are popular because they work. I love the information you posted about making these a part of formative assessment. Right on! Thanks!
The role of a rubric is to provide clear criteria for outlining what is expected of students. The rubric should identify the criteria, the expected deliverable, the point values per criteria, and various levels of proficiency as measured by the rubric.
Dr. Ruby,
Clear criteria are the essential components of the rubric. It's important to review them each time you use the rubric and get feedback from students to make sure the criteria are on target and easily understood. Thanks for your input.
The role of a rubric is to ensure that the students know exactly how the assignments will be graded. The rubrics should specifically address the elements to be graded such as content of answer, grammar/spelling, and any other criteria on which the assignment will be graded. If students are given a grading rubric with the assignment, then they understand exactly what is required and how the assignment will be graded.
Frances
Frances,
AND - the rubrics assist the instructor as well. They help the instructor be more objective in assessment and more consistent. Thanks!
