The toxic co worker
As easy as it may seem to avoid that one toxic co worker. I believe in approaching said individual when it compromises the care that is given to a patient. Sadly, because she does not have her license yet, the constructive feedback is taken harshly. I take great measure to thoroughly think about what I am going to say and how I am going to approach the situation, but I do not see any positive changes in her care to patients. I have heard attending and others make negative and toxic comments about her but the issue continues to cycle. What suggestions can be given to avoid throwing off the fun dynamic of the workplace without compromising the care of the patients.
Liza,
There is no compromise when another person's health is on the forefront. The best practice is to be kind but truthful. Your honesty may help them adjust. If this doesn't work it is our professional duty to not allow mediocrity be allowed.

My job entails introducing new nursing students to the hospital enviorment. This usually is a skilled nursing home. Sometimes in these emviroments the students met and work with the toxic and burned out nurse. It can take the gilding off the they fill overwhelmed.
I try and use reverse psychology and call them to the challange to rise above and set a new example to bring back the sparks of enthusism and rewards. it has worked on several occasions and sometimes a toxic nurse will come to our students and say"thank you for showing me my roots"
nancy,
I see this all the time in different settings. We have this diversity existing with where we work. It is always great to find the people who have found the right niche in their work. I have worked in the education field for 43 years and in my heart know that this has been the right place for me. I know some of your students will feel this in their heart as they move forward. Those that don't will have to grow into their profession or change. We know most people will change their jobs 4 to 5 times in a life time. Sour grapes and toxic employees definitely can be burnout employees but they also could be in the wrong job. Students need to know they will meet up with the challenge of working with unhappy people at times but with their youth and energy they can help them.
