Recommending a college
If a student is not interested in one of the programs offered by my college can I suggest another school to the student? "Check with ABC school, I think they offer that."
Wendy,
There is no regulation that would prevent you from refering a student to another school.

It may be "ethical" to mention another school but I don't think it is the best option.
By mentioning another school you are "recommending" that school. When you do this the student may very well think your employer is "recommending" this school as well. I am guessing your school wouldn't want your student left with that idea.
I am online and the atmosphere may be a bit different but I would let the student do the research here.
I would be careful about recommending a specific school since that could be construed as an official endorsement by some students. Sometimes I give tips about how to search for a school in their area that offers different programs. For example, if someone is looking for a Certified Nursing Assistant program, I might suggest that they ask their local hospital or nursing home (since these are the types of employers who hire many CNAs) if they know of a school in their area that tends to turn out good CNAs.
I think recommending a student to another school where a specific program is offered is exellence in customer service. If the program of interest in not offered at your school and there is no interest in what you do offer - this is in the best interest of the student. Referring a student to another school to explore options that are not offered at your school is not only compliant it is ethically correct.
Hello Timothy,
I completely agree. Working for a smaller college we may not have all of the courses that students are looking for so in the event that we don't offer the course that they are looking for I think that it is an excellent service to the student to refer then somewhere else that can offer them what they are looking for. The overall goal should be to service the student. Thank you for sharing.

We often get people asking about another provider if we are unable to accommodate or offer a program that meets a student's needs. We find it best to mention that we don't keep up with other institutions and it is best to do some research online and make phone calls to those institutions to make the best decision for them.
I agree totally, because this could result in a referral from that student you couldn't help. They may have a friend who may have an interest in a particular program your school offers.
Thank you John.
I've always been unsure of this answer. I appreciate your response.
I also agree and your name and college name sticks with them so when they hear someone talking about going to school and wants a program you offer, then you get a positive referral
