Your Communication Methods

we prefered to use face to face method of comunication because the capacity to answer question at the moment it is important for the courses that we have.

Hello Jorge. It sounds as if communicating with others face-to-face is important to the students/people you work with to answers their questions. How will you work to improve your face-to-face communications then?

My telephone communications are not as strong as my face to face skills. I can read others expressions and body language very easily. Developing voice tone and using words to get my point across when I can't see the other person is something I feel I can improve on. Are there certain things I can do to prepare and become better at it?

Hi David. Sounds as if you have the face-to-face communication figured out and have an opportunity to improve on phone communication, correct? Well, you're definitely on the right track with understanding the use of voice tone and words is critical. In addition, you may want to consider matching the other person. In other words, if they are speaking slowly - you can too. If they are speaking quickly - you can as well. This is an "invisible" way of forming rapport with anohter person. Keep in mind that once you match them, you have the ability to change their pace, tone, etc. But you have to match them first. Hope this is helpful and continued success!

I LOVE face to face communication... you can easily read the other persons facial expressions and body languguge.

Email can be easily misunderstood and misread...I will follow these helpful tips. Thank you.

Hi Irene. Looks as if you prefer face to face whenever possible. I agree that it is so much easier to understand what people are really thinking. In the absence of this critical piece of information...errors may occur. And yes, email is one of the biggest culprits! I'm curious, how will you specifically work on improving your understanding of email messages?

I will better prepare my emails, to ensure the the intention is properly presented and the value to the student is properly communicated.

I will work on developing my phone communication. The training module suggets creating a personalized script with a greeting and ending. I think this will help me cover the main points I need to make in a short period of time.

That sounds like a good idea, Maria. Developing your personal script allows you to keep the main points top of mind while allowing flexibility in your conversation. Let me know how it works for you!

It is easier for me to communicate face-to-face with someone because I am able to read their body language and get their feedback right away, contrary to having a telephone conversation with someone. Sometimes I am not as prepared sometimes for phone conversatons and that does not look so professional on my part. So, I do intend on improving my telephone communication skills.

Wonderful insight Francette! Sometimes when things don't work out, the best you can do is use it as a learning moment and it appears you have. Preparing for phone conversations by working on communication skills is a great goal. How specifically will you go about working on this area?

I will try and develop or work on my body language communication when im in front of a classroom. Alot of it is acting but i also want to feel comfortable and be comfortable.

So it sounds as if you want to be as comfortable on the INSIDE as it appears on the OUTSIDE. Do I have that right?

I think I need to work on all three forms of communication. Before taking this portion of the class, I always thought I had good communication skills but I think I have some lacking, mainly in phone skills. I think I get nervous when I get on the phone and just want to spit my message out real quick and hang up.

In my experience many admission reps feel a sense of accomplishment in getting their information "out there" yet may miss the opportunity of really connecting with others in a meaningful way. It reminds me of the question, "Is it possible to be 100% efficient and 0% effective?"

I will work on my telephone skills and my tone of voice. I feel that my appointment set ratio will improve if I can convey the sense of urgency over the phone a little better.

I enjoy face to face the most, but will work on the written formula. This method is probably my weakest and I need to make sure I cover my purpose, and give it a value. I usually try to put in a time frame, but that may need some working on too. We can do the most damage in sending a written message that is not prepared properly. It was good to go over these points to refresh areas that you let slide.
