retention and disiplin

i have found that by setting the disiplin level at the very start ,just like telling the student the courses coriculom will help the students understand what will be exspected of them throughout the course. this will also help the following instructors as well.

Do you have a uniform set of discipline expectations for classroom instructors? If so, are deviations allowed?

I have found that if I lay the foundation of expectations during the first day or two of class,I have very few dicipline problems out of my students. In the past I inadvertantly did not lay down the expectaions and seemed to have more challenges during the period of the course. I also found that I must "stick to my guns"..When a student gets out of line-the rest of the class is looking for me to "fix" it. If the issue is not resolved, you have the appearance of a "push-over" to them. Do what you say you're going to do, but don't go overboard.

I agree, but you have to back up what you tell them, or they will walk all over you

How do you back up what you tell them?

when you give them your expectations for the course & they don't comply, you have to call them on it. They have to know you are serious about their education

I have found it very important to set a standard of expectations and be consistant with every class. You will develop a reputation with the students as they talk to one another. There is no question when they come into class as to what is expected of them as far as behavior goes. This makes for a better learning enviorment for everyone and a better teaching condition in the classroom.

Is there a common code of conduct for all classes or does each instructor have latitude to set their own standard?

Our student handbook clearly shows our policies and procedures for discipline, issues and concerns. We do over this book during orientation and once students have read it over, they sign a form stating that they have read, understand and agree to abide by. We also have an Educational commitment form that staff and students sign together. It lays out each other's commitment and responsibility. We find that this works well.
