Losing students
If I see a pattern of hours missed by a student, I have a talk with that person in order to see, without being too nosey, what is happening with him. If a student scores low on his/her test, I get involved right away, tutoring, what ever it takes to get their scores and especially their confidence level on the rise.
Students that miss a lot of hours,or come in late regularly;I also try to catch them to talk with, to see if there is a problem,if I can help,or guide them in the right direction to the right people.If a student fails a test,I will get involved quickly,because low confidence from a low score, can very easily carry on through out the course.This will not make for a pleasant enviroment for the student or instructor.
Student that quit school most often are those without any moral support. It is very sad when a student give up and quit because they believed they are not supported. I is even more sad when this is a result of staff member who is most often unaware of their action.
They first need to see a value to their education before you can make a change in them.
If a student scores low on a quiz, I have them study more and sometime I read the questions to them.
I do the same thing. If I notice repeat absence, and/or low grades, I immediately take time outside of class, whether it be 10 minutes or an hour. Some students open up immediately and some take time, while others never do.
I try to have a talk with students when they miss time or score bad on a test or quiz. Sometimes I will suggest they speak with the student counselor for more help
John, do you document these conversations? Does the student have to formally acknowledge your conversation?
