Activities for the first week
I think different activities each day during the first week will be great.
Also a good strategy is to call the students one or two weeks clases start. This have to be done by the facilitator of the course.

Contacting students during week 2 or 3 can be highly effective, as you point out. This is about when 'reality' begins to set in with course expectations and the difficulties of balance school with other responsibilities.

That is what we do here as well. On the Monday of the 2nd week, our Campus Director pulls all of the new students into a group meeting. They talk about what they like; what they don't like, and we ask if there is anything they need assistance with. This has helped us here.
