I have my students write a reflective paper for their final exams in which they detail what they have learned and how they will be able to apply it in their personal and professional lives.  While it is closed book, they know the question ahead of time so they can give it some thought.  I really try to emphasize throughout the course that writing is used in all fields and ineffective communication can have disasterous effects.  This is particularly true for students who are studying in the health care fields.  Now if I could only convince them of the value of APA....
