Keeping up with technology in learning environment

How good are you in keeping up with technology in your
learning environment? I mean letting students text you about being late to
class, collaborating on projects and posting assignments on site such as Google
or using YouTube and other websites in the classroom for learning benefits. And
do you consider this to be a part of your professional growth and development?

I do allow my students to text me if they are going to be late or absent. Some students do not have access to home internet and cannot reach me in that manner. Attendance is part of their grade so it is important that they make the instructors aware prior to class. I also believe the internet can be a great teaching tool, if used properly in the classroom.

I prefer to not have my students text me.  I do ask them to email me or to use facebook as a way to contact me to let me know about absences, problems, etc.  I use youtube videos as a way to show what we are learning about in class.

@Shanna,

Is there any special reason why you don't allow your students to text you?

I'm trying to use all the technology that my students are using today, and I believe that makes it easier and more interesting for them to pay attention to the class. I also make sure that all the students are on the same level of proficiency, so nobody feels left behind.
