Better Preparing New CTE Teachers in Mississippi by Promoting Academic Integration

Academic integration strategies play an important part in student success, so teaching strategies related to academic integration are shared, discussed, and modeled through a program for alternate route CTE teachers in Mississippi. Training teachers to enforce academic integration in the CTE classroom improves the student's use of critical thinking in a contextual setting which in turn better prepares them for their future.

Strategies such as guided notes, mind mapping, word walls, exit slips, and Venn Diagrams, are modeled to incorporate literacy. Math integration concepts such as a classroom economy system, current events, alphabet math, chunking, and think-solve-pair-share are also enforced during the training.

Incorporating current events such as the Super Bowl, NASCAR, Mardi Gras, etc., into a Career and Technical Education classroom is an excellent way to promote academic integration and make the curriculum more relatable to student interest. By integrating a popular event into the classroom, CTE instructors can create a more engaging and meaningful learning experience for students while also helping to develop critical thinking and analytical skills that are essential to any career.

The classroom economy system is another strategy for the CTE alternate route program. This system promotes a positive classroom environment and practices real-world math and economic concepts in the process. During the training, teachers are awarded CTE Clash Cash (play money) as reinforcement for positive behavior. They may spend the CTE Class Cash on miscellaneous teacher and classroom supplies offered during the training. Examples of a more in-depth integration of this concept would be to allow students an opportunity to receive an income, make purchases, and pay bills, i.e., desk rental, insurance, etc., in the classroom throughout the school year. Economic concepts such as supply and demand, opportunity cost, inflation, equity, debt, etc., can be discussed when the system is utilized.

These are great practical examples for CTE teachers ti include in their instruction to increase engagement and also reinforce academic skills.
