I agree with maintaining proper documentation about issues with students, staff, and faculty. Stating the problem, the investigation and solution always help others in the future having the same problem. 

Some best practices that work for me is to establish on the first day of class expectations,  and being transparent. I also believe giving good cutomer  service to students will go along way starting with Listening which can lead to gaining their trust. Not all students have a reliable support system which is important and needed to be a successful student.
