The benefits of online learning: EL 105 through Max Knowledge

I recently completed EL 105, an online class which focuses on communication in the online education forum.  I am impressed with how concisely and clearly the class was presented.  As someone who has been an English professor for 13 years but an online "real time" synchronous instructor for only two years, I found this class quite beneficial.  I learned some online jargon that I had not known before (such as the restrictive meaning of the word "transparent" and how it applies to the online communcation world), and I became aware of new social networking sites, such as Ning.  While I do feel that there are certain things in the face-to-face world that can never be achieved in the online world, I recognize that for many, the benefits to online education appeal to many individuals for a variety of reasons:  time, finances, scheduling, family needs, etc.  I appreciate the fact that EL 105 really drove home the importance of civility in all online communication:  teacher to student, student to teacher, and student to student.

I enjoyed the EL 105 course that focuses with communicating with students. I especially gained insight with the generational differences of our learners that all of us invariably have in our online courses. This course helped open my eyes to the need to further differentiate to meet the needs and learning styles from the various generation groups that make up our courses.

I too just completed EL105.  I found it a helpful reminder.  I found my first experience teaching online to be much more satisfying and engaging than I had expected it would be.  I attribute this in a very un-modest way to my ability to engage with people.  I'm a good typist and I am able to balance clear, direct communication with a casual tone.  I have found that my presence enables students to feel at ease and try their best.  I am not very well versed in many of the more advanced technological tools, but I have found that course postings and discussion forums along with the use of email to reach groups or individuals are all effective ways of building community through communication.
