Smart Student Motivation

Having an extremely knowlegible student presents a challege in keeeping him/her motivated. One method I use is to have that student help other students who are having problems, which in turn keeps the knowlegible student motivated by allowing him/her to show their knowledge.

I have the same issue as well but also find that very helpful for the class.  Often time the student is sort of twiddling on there fingers trying to figure out next what to do and for awhile the student would literally just check out of the classroom.  This is because the student feels there is nothing more to learn especially since all work for the day is completed.  I have expressed to the student to utilize your service by helping your classmates and in return you may feel somewhat rewarded by helping others and also showing a different mindset than through the mindset of the teacher.

One of the most powerful tool that I mostly use in my class is the knowinh my students name. However, if the class is large sometimes is very difficult to know all their names within five weeks. Any comment?

I have no problem asking the student who has knowledge a few extra questions, but a few questions could develop. The student could start showing off, other students might feel resentful. I have had instances where the student had wrong information and they shared their wrong beliefs with the rest of the class. Often there is no one so strong in their beleifs as someone who is wrong. I will ask how they came to their knowledge or beleif and share how I see other nurses practice in a manner that is not always correct. I know that I must always challenge myself to keep current and look for the current research to support that practice. This discussion allows me to discuss with students the need to be current and keep an open mind no matter our age. I certainly learn as much from my students as they learn from me.

I believe that their are a great deal of differences in an adult and a child learner. The only thing that I tend to get annoyed with is, treating a student with "kid gloves" because we are afraid to lose them as a student. I believe that they are in for a reality check when they go into the real world. I am all for helping students, but my job is to properly educate them.
