ED205: Enhancing Students' Professional Skills

In an adult-learning environment, lack of professionalism has been of great concern to me.  Let's face it. A number of adult learners expect to be treated like professional adults while behaving otherwise.  It took me a while to understand this.  I often asked myself, "How can I make them see a professional adult in me without sounding conceited?"  Then it hit me.  I realized that I could not do that.  Otherwise, they would see me as the exact person that I don't want them to see me as--a conceited instructor--because I am not.  I just wanted to "teach" them how to behave like professionals.  I thought I tried everything until this course.  Thank you for ED205.  I learned a lot that will help me make dealing with one major classroom learning barrier enjoyable and fulfilling.

"It takes a village to raise a child" the saying goes.....applying this to students for optimum success will require the participation of every staff and faculty who comes into contact with that student. The student must see "professional consistency" in the institution; If this does not occur then as the other saying goes we are..."flogging a dead horse"

I absolutely enjoyed this course, because it seems more and more of our younger generation really is struggling in professionalism, writing skills  as well as computer skills.

I encourage my students to work on team projects ttogether and individually so they get the computer skills in high gear and realize the importance and impact this will have on their career. Writing observations of my new students is quite dismal since many students are extremely weak in their writing.  Perhaps texting and Facebook is a factor - too many short cuts now in how to explain ourselves.

Loved the course; I learned more than I thought I would  - Quite pleased!

Teachers gear their lesson plans around learning the "hard" skills of their course. But, I feel strongly that we need to built into our courses for students to be more professional. This will especially help college kids be more prepared as they enter the work foce in today's competitive society!

I agree.  It's not enough that we work as professionals in the industry for students to appreciate professionalism.  This must be embraced in the classroom in every way we interact along with good guidance to help prepare them for careers in the professional world.  Now I make an effort to emphasize some professional conduct application in every class.  So far they seem to appreciate that.
