Adult attention spans

Within this course, I learned why students do not answer question as quickly within my lectures as they would within the first 10-15 minutes of class, because as an adult our attention span is 15-18 minutes.  This is very interesting because I thought we had great attention spans, as we got older.  Now, that I know that my student’s attention span needs to be recharge after about 13 minutes into the chat, I will look for new strategies to entice them into refocusing.  I do know by using the different learning styles within the chats help with the attention span of most of the students.  For example, if your lecture is death by PowerPoint, then you have lost your tactile learners, as they are not engage.

I agree, especially with the diverse population of adult learners it is important to keep all engaged.  Maybe some of the students are more mature (40's) while some of the younger students were raised in the "computer and instant gratification" era.  All require different teaching strategies and activities to enhance learning.
